A nice pair of heavily charactered mud that once saw use here in SW Ontario. Both of these styles were used on the former Canada Southern Railway following its acquisition (or lease) by the Michigan Central RR. I've found both styles turn up in various locations along the line, which ran from Fort Erie to Windsor, Ontario.

At left is a U-108 unmarked dry process toll style made by Thomas in a lighter-than-average colour that is heavy on orange tones and is sometimes called "rust mustard". This example is a bit darker than the lightest and most desirable examples out there, but still glows in bright sunlight. Lots of great character on this one, with some missing glaze spots on the upper wire ridge and one side of the skirt. Good condition overall with just some crazing in the glaze, probably left from manufacture.

At right is a U-149 made by Pittsburgh. This one has a lighter-than-average glaze as well, with lots of mottling and the smattering of irregularities and character that seem to be standard on these things. One side of the base is a bit out of whack and there's a glob of excess porcelain stuck to the area just above the wire groove on one side. This one has two small areas of flaking along the ultra sharp upper wire ridge on one side, but is otherwise in good condition overall.
