This one is a bit out of my normal area of expertise. I've always loved the idea of these SF wooden cables and I had the chance to pick a few up from a friend several years ago. I just couldn't resist the wonderful character and history of these old work horses. Really, how often do you see one that hasn't been "restored" and still retains all its original grime? My understanding is this piece originated from the Walter Ruedrich collection and may have been set there right after coming out of use.

Condition is tough to describe with a piece as worn and abused as these look. One area on the skirt has cracked and slightly separated along the wood grain. Another small crack in the crown is roughly parallel to that one. Lots of shallow surface cracking along the curvy wood grain of the ultra-dense lignum vitae. The top groove has some rubbing from the cable at its edges. Some sparse cracked remnants of a dark green paint or copper oxide-stained wire covering still cling to the skirt, side groove, and crown here and there. A big glob of some sort of tar is stuck to the crown on one side. There's a lot going on on this thing and I just love the character!
