Larry grew up in the Marion / Freeman area in southeastern South Dakota and for a time, he worked for the phone company near the end of the open-wire era. He built up a 'casual' collection of approximately 200 pieces during that time. He later moved to Sioux Falls, having changed careers to the Post Office, and I met him in the mid-1990s after seeing his name in the 'new subscribers' listing in Crown Jewels. The one show he attended was the last one held in Omaha. He later retired and donated his entire collection to the museum in Freeman before moving to Ames, Iowa to be closer to one of his sons. Larry had a fine singing voice and appeared in various productions over the years (here he's singing in the Ames Seniors' Variety show in 2022 - credit to the Ames Tribune). Sadly, he passed away August 31st at age 79 from prostate cancer. Rest in peace friend. |
