The Chesapeake and Ohio main line ran through some of the most remote areas in the northeastern United States. It crossed the Allegheny Mountains near the West Virginia/ Virginia border and passed through the sparsely populated New River Gorge. It was on this line that I became interested in much more than glass insulators. The beautiful landscape and ghost towns all along the ROW fascinated me. Even if no glass was found the journey through the remote mountains and valleys made the trip worth it. I have lived with this mindset ever since. CSX came through and removed the top two and three Western Union crossarms from most of the C&O main of West Virginia in the early 1990's. As a result the pole lead was a shadow of what in once was by the time I came along. There was a good mix of both signal and beehive styles found. |
