Last week, I noticed there was an auction proposed for Saturday 8-16-25 in Mont Alto, PA, and up for auction were buckets and boxes of insulators covered in mud. At least, I thought it was mud. By Friday, I was feeling a bit under the weather and wasn't sure I would make the auction. Before going to bed Friday night, I took an Alegra tablet and some Nyquil. If I wanted to get to the auction, I would have to get up early, maybe like 4am. Coughing woke me up at 2:45 Saturday morning. I was feeling somewhat better, so I decided to take a shower and get on the road. I got to the site early enough to look through some of the insulators, but not all of them. I chatted with the gentleman that owned the place for quite some time. The site was an old oil pumping station and there were several brick buildings, and this gentleman worked his trade in one of the smaller buildings. He was a mold maker. He made wooden molds for people to use for making other objects. What kind of objects I don't know and there were only two mold samples in the auction. The gentleman said he started his trade in 1958. He did NOT collect insulators. He said the insulators were in the attic of his building when he started his trade. He had no idea who put them there in the attic. The insulators had not been in daylight all that time until the auction workers carried them downstairs. Entering the site, I crossed a creek and an old RR grade. I would later learn that the creek is the Little Antietam Creek, and the RR was once called the Mont Alto Railroad. I will post some pictures of what I found and I may later update this post. Gus Stafford came to the auction, but he said he only wanted to bid on the wood working tools and not the insulators. It was good seeing you Gus! |
