Here's an early Canadian threaded piece that gets overlooked too often: the unembossed "rounded base" CD 143. These are a solid 1880s piece of Canadian telegraph history that did a lot of heavy lifting from coast to coast in its day. For whatever reason they don't seem to garner much of a following in the hobby, which is really unfortunate. Maybe it's because they aren't (easily) found in a wide variety of colours, or maybe it's the fact that they're unembossed? In any case, I think they're just great early pieces of glass. This one is a nice crisp, almost icy light green aqua colour. It has a bit of whittling on the crown, and the best part is the milk, fizz, and carbon swirls around the dome and top of the pinhole that give it a bit of a "halo" when viewed back or underlit. It shows its age of 140ish years well. Despite its age, this one remains in good condition with just a couple small flakes on the usually damaged sharp inner base edge. This one is better than most for that. It also has a few light scuffs in the wire groove and a couple on the skirt. Overall I'd call it VNM as far as these go... or maybe NM as far as the overall hobby would see it. I'm now asking $35 USD plus actual shipping cost for this early character piece. I'm always happy to trade for early Canadian glass or Canadian-made porcelain insulators. I have a long-standing want list of Canadian-made porcelain posted, [id=505519866; please click here to see it]. I accept PayPal, or personal cheque from any member of ICON or any collector with whom I have dealt before. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or for more photos, and look through my other items or unsold sales stock to combine shipping on items. |
