Always wildly charactered, these U-149 and U-149A PHV products are a favourite of mine. A number were used on the former Canada Southern / Michigan Central line that ran through southern Ontario and was a regular hunting spot for me some 20 years ago. That line is more or less gone now, but a few of these stragglers are still hanging around in the barn. The great part about these is that no two are ever alike.

The example at left has a fairly normal medium to darker brown glaze, but has a crooked wire groove, and a glazed over chip that removes about 20% of the inner skirt. It has a bruise/fracture on one side that appears that runs about 2 cm up the skirt and then branches left and right, being only visible as faint black lines.

The centre example has a nice lighter caramel/brown glaze with some blonde mottling, and random globs of porcelain stuck onto the dome and skirt and glazed over in a few spots. The wire groove is inconsistent in depth and a bit crooked. Just a great colour and looks awesome in natural sunlight! This one appears to be VNM.

And at right is the less common U-149A. There were never as many of these on the line I used to find them on, and I guess they have a different look because of the "darth vader" wire groove and the presence of mold lines. This one has a typical dark brown glaze with fine speckles. It's in good condition, but has a fair bit of crazing, with a spiderweb of fine black glaze cracks all over. These don't run through to the pinhole and do give it a unique look.
