A riser on a municipal 2400V system, shortly before the city replaced it with a modern distribution line, likely operated at 12.47kV. This city was content to upgrade its municipally owned distribution system at a leisurely pace, replacing poles, arms, and insulators until a segment was ready to be switched from the old 2400V corridor to a previously upgraded segment. An unexpected engine failure (and resulting fire in the city power plant) on a bitterly cold day in February prompted the city to make conversion of the remaining 2400V its top priority, intending for completion by the end of June. This riser was for the last major customer to be converted; it is a bit scary to see 2400V primary fed into a typical low-voltage riser pipe! (Credit: Google Maps) |
