Dug over the weekend by me in an old pennsylvania farm field. This particular cob was minted in 1697 at Potosi Bolivia mint. It weights in a 1.096 grams, below the official 1.7 gram specification for a half real but above the specification for 1/4 real of 0.85. The reverse has the mark of mint assayer Sebastián de Chavarria who only served a few months and a 1 all intertwined. Cobs with his mark are scarce. Most cobs are recovered from Spanish shipwrecks. The non shipwreck cobs without the salt water damage are more sought after.
