Did a little antique store hopp'n yesterday. Found this in the last shop. My first brass top railroad lantern. Altho not my road, I'm a L&N RR, N.C.& St.L Ry. and L.H.& St.L Ry. collector. But who could pass up a brass top bell bottom and was priced the way I like em??? Side of top is stamped Steam Gauge Lantern Co. Rochester NY. The bottom of the bell is stamped Adams Westlake with patent from 1866-1873. The globe is an extended base and is wheel cut T&O.C. I had a flashed red V.C.RR. Vincennes & Cairo Railroad that was wheel cut as well. The burner is an odd ball. This type burned whale oil, lard "signal oil', and kerosene. It has a copper heater wire. This copper wire comes up through the burner and has or had two curved ends. One is broke off. The flame would heat the curved wire ends which in turn heated the lard oil in cold weather making it liquid. Burner is Pat Oct. 5 1880. Based on the patina the cage and frame have been buddies for a long time and are of the same time period.
