Brockton, MA, c.1910. Electric Utility Pole at Intersection Near Downtown Area.

The utility that served this southeastern MA city at the time was the Edison Electric Company of Brockton. It was founded in 1881 and Thomas Edison performed numerous experiments with underground direct current transmission not far from where this photo was taken. In 1938 the utility became the Brockton Edison Company. Their service area covered about 27 other communities in the area. I was born in Brockton and that is where a lot of my fascination as a little kid began about overhead electric line construction that lined the streets as well as loving the old Western Union telegraph line that pararelled the RR tracks in the city. And New England Telephone's old openwire subscriber circuits along side streets before they all bit the dust by the late 1960s (but at least this make for great opportunities to gather lots of discarded insulators!!).
