Woodmont, CT. Electric Transmission Lines Along Coastal Commuter RR Train Route

Photo taken some time in the 1960s. The upper structures carrying long suspension insulators is a 138kv electric transmission route connecting the New England electric grid with that of New York State. This is one of six transfer lines interfacing with New England (including Canada) whereby electricity is traded between neighboring electric-grid regions. The smaller multiparts support 11kv for the electric train motors that travel along this very busy route to New York City (the origin of its electric operation is in Boston, MA).

This electrified transit line was built around 1910 (some parts possibly earlier) using small Thomas multipart insulators.

The large units you see upon a track overpass in the background is circuit breaker gear.
