A cottonwood root that I found in the Yellowstone river near Billings. It is completely dry, lightweight, and strong. I carved eight sides using an old drawknife, and sanded it a lot. I drilled holes and pounded six pins through the wood. I waxed it with some natural orange/honey/beeswax oil. It's nice material to work with. I may make more in the future, if I can find some nice pins, or somebody who wants to buy an ugly stick...
