Boston Vicinity, c.1900. Large Open Type Street Lamp Arc Light on Hangman Arm.

This fixture was operated on a series street lighting circuit (the same principle employed for many decades later). Its supply wires deadended on each side of the two-pin crossarm seen here and each one led to the lamp. Above the fixture is a pulley with a rope through it for lowering so that the carbon rods inside its glass globe could be replaced (this was done after each evening of operation). The wires were draped so that there would be enough slack to lower the luminaire down to ground level for maintenance. Photo possibly taken at a construction site.
