In some places (especially fancier areas) where the residents opposed planting utility poles through neighborhoods, electric service wires sometimes were strung through trees with crossarms attached to them. Sooner than later this method of line construction gave way to employing utility poles along streets owing to ever-present New England storm damage and the increasing need for more wire and transformers as the electric light rapidly was becoming more popular everywhere.
