Downtown USA, c.1957, Utility Crew Replacing Underground-Wired Street Light

The old meets the new in this photograph. The former street lamp (an incandescent one that once had a big glass globe atop it) is in the process of being removed from its footing. Towering above and aside it is a new pole, outfitted with a mercury vapor light fixture. The latter provided twice as much light for the same power consumed (as incandescents) and lasted many times longer.
