Note that all of the electric utility gear seen here is non-sky gray. Thus, brown insulators, black transformers, etc. About 1965 such equipment started to appear on the scene as "sky gray" to blend in better with their surroundings. This move was initiated by Lyndon B. Johnson's wife ("Lady Bird Johnson") in an effort to make overhead utilities less of an "eyesore". Although this move was not a mandate, most line-equipment manufacturers were producing light gray gear as standard, including insulators. Brown, mahogany and other insulator colors (including porcelain fuse cutouts, lightning arresters, switchgear components, etc.) continued since the late 1960s but as an option. An incandescent "gumball" style street light is seen on far right. Note the pintype insulators mounted upon its mastarm supporting the two wires that powered it. |
