A 1910s or 20s street lamp is seen on the far left. It housed either a carbon-arc assembly or incandescent lamp. It has a lowering mechanism attached to the top of it (and note the rope on the left of it...) for lowering the luminaire down to street level for convenient and safe maintenance.
