It was common practice in the United States through at least 1910 to string fire alarm circuits along tops of utility poles. This was done so that these vital communications lines leading to the nearest fire house would not be endangered by any other wires falling upon them. As the telephone became more popular and overhead construction became "somewhat" safer and improved commencing in the teens, fire alarm circuits were gradually strung in between the electric utility's lines and those of the phone company.
