Boston, 1900. Close View of Fire Alarm Crossarm with Wires on Station Bell Tower

Four wires were strung from the tower's crossarm to the top of the electric utility pole on the left. From there these wires were connected to fire alarm call boxes throughout this vicinity's neighborhoods.

Note the "hook" on the left side of the tower. Perhaps this supported a threadless insulator at one time. Boston's fire alarm system dates back to around 1850, so it is certain many threadless and early threaded insulators were used upon its lines.
