A few weeks ago I noticed a paper wasp nest in one of my outdoor suspension displays. Over this past weekend I finally got around to removing the nest. Opening it up shows inside the nest are several layers of comb. These nests are a one summer use, the adults burrow into the ground to overwinter. The empty nests do not last long. As winter comes and the leaves fall from the trees, these nests become exposed and easy targets for migrating birds which easily shred the paper thin hull searching for unhatched larva [id=413383171;Bob Scafe]
