These junction boxes were made of wood and were fairly common through the teens or 1920s with Western Union and other telegraph companies. They had individual openwire leads entering them near their top which attached to a terminal board inside (acting as dry-spot connections). From there an insulated paired cable left the box (near its underside) that led to the telegrapher's office in a nearby building.
