These lights were pretty common around Hingham, MA and they illuminated intersections quite nicely. About a dozen were still in service until 1982 when the municipal utility replaced them (with all other lights) with energy-efficient high-pressure sodium fixtures, The latter were mounted on long mast arms. The old lights on the span wire strings used white porcelain "forestry" or "donut" insulators to string the wires through. In the early 1960s the town converted most of their street series light fixtures using plug-in adaptors that accommodated standard 120V street lighting service bulbs. The rest of the fixtures (including the pole-mounted ones) and spanwire supports remained the same, saving much money during Hingham's series-to-multiple conversion upon the wiring and everything else was in good shape. Most of the 120V conversions were controlled by a 120V "pilot wire" that was activated by a 3,000 watt photoelectric lighting control designed for this purpose. Some utilities used a specially colored insulator to identify the load-side of the photocontrol but Hingham did not.

Shown is a Wheeler Reflector Company double-walled incandescent fixture during 1946. It illuminated Hingham Center through the early 1960s.

At the end of 1945 (which very likely was the same with other public and private utilities across America); the Hingham Light Board reported that "Government restrictions have largely been removed, but the scarcity of materials

During their year-end 1946 report, the Hingham Light Plant commissioners stated "There is still a scarcity of material which handicaps the department in providing more and better street lighting, but we hope this situation will be gradually improved."

This accounts for far fewer older street lights and other equipment that would ordinarily be scrapped. Instead it was repaired when possible...
