That telegraph pole on the right surely was doing its best to hang right in there with its piano-tight wires. At the time those poles were not very old. Some that I have seen along this stretch had their manufacturer and date branding on them (generally around 1930-33). These were creosote poles.

A railroad-owned signal line extended along the left.

A strong hurricane that was well offshore brought a beating to the New England coastline. It has been known as the "Outer Banks Hurricane."
