Over a year ago I solicited input from ICON regarding the elusive American and Brookfield CD 143.4s. For those of you that are new to the insulator hobby these are insulators at first glance very closely resemble their cousins the American and Brookfield CD 145. But when flipped upside down, both lack the inner skirt. Hopefully this post may bring forth more knowledge along with any new finds and possibly new colors on these illusive insulators. Both the American and the Brookfield CD 143.4 examples are extremely hard to find and I personally consider both examples rare. As far as colors known to exist, they only came in American Blue, Brookfield Aqua and a Brookfield Green Aqua. As for where they have been found and/or located it seems American examples have popped up in New York state, New Hampshire and Washington state and various points in between. The most Americans found at any one location was two. Americans have been picked up (unknowingly in a couple of cases) in purchased collections, off of eBay and yard sales. Brookfield's have been recovered in a bit more traditional way off railroad communication lines in Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts. As with Americans, Brookfield's have also been reported being picked up at yard sales, purchased in collections and off of eBay. What is interesting to me is that of those reported, Brookfield examples have mainly been found east of the of the Mississippi river with the exception being units purchased in collections or at shows west of the Mississippi river. As for totals, Americans total at Fifteen (15) with Brookfields reporting a slightly higher number of Twenty-two (22.) I would like to thank all of the ICON members who responded to my request. And hopefully as a result of this post new information regarding these "shy" insulators will come forth. And remember next time you see an innocent looking American or a Brookfield sitting on a pin or lying on the ground, pick it up and "flip-it-over" as you just never know. The one pictured here is a two-date [010]. |
