These were made by KPF for many years near San Francisco and were very popular, particularly on the west coast and within New England Electric Service (NEES) territory. Here in the northeast these were known as "sidewinders". A suspension insulator with a special metal cap was connected to the horizontal switch rod at the crossarm-end of the suspension string. In later years line posts were also used as horizontal deadends for the same kind of switchgear, at least by NEES.
