The forementioned utility commenced in 1881 and was known as the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of Brockton. During 1938 the organization's name was changed to the Brockton Edison Company.

Thomas Edison performed many of his experiments in Brockton. Among his successes was a state-of-the-art underground direct current line he designed that ran beneath the city's downtown streets.
