These were employed through the late 1890s for spanning wires across city streets, alleys, etc. This method rather quickly became less practical because of the criss-crossing, falling wires causing short circuits beneath as well as injuries. The practice of solely running utility wires on poles soon followed. Even though this method wasn't too much safer, it presented a start to somewhat better pole-line organization as multiple utilities shared individual poles.
