This storm was hurricane Donna. It soon moved up the Atlantic coast and hit southeast New England and Long Island pretty hard. I remember it well as a kid, with lots of broken poles and downed wires all over the place. We were living in a Boston suburb then. I found my very first insulators right after that storm. They were two rather broken orange-pumkin porcelain "hats". I treasured them greatly as I mounted them on a couple broken wooden pins, also found by the side of the road. In late December of that year I found my first complete insulator. It also was a porcelain pintype. While watching some electric company guys do some work atop a nearby pole, I witnessed one of them toss an insulator into the approximately 8" deep snow below. While they were still working, not looking (and the coast clear!) I went and grabbed it! With my heart pounding, I ran through several backyards to get back home. My affliction for collecting insulators hasn't changed a bit from that bright winter day's "revelation"! |
