The uppermost crossarm along this route supported electric service wires. Lower on the pole are fire alarm circuits. This basic style of line construction was very common here in the Northeast and in some locales still exists, particularly were 4kv primary is used. Perhaps a line of trees (like on the opposite side of this roadway) were on pole-line side of the street at one time, therefore the extended alley arms.
