The latter was made by General Electric and provided a characteristic, saturated yellow light that was used to illuminate dangerous intersections, railroad crossings, bridges, etc. This light source was fairly popular in the 1940s and 50s. Low pressure sodium lamps were far more energy efficient than the incandescent bulbs of the day and lasted much longer.
