This sweetheart of a CD 134 B.G.M. Co. was one of a mere handful that I recall on old fire alarm lines here south of Boston. They were widely scattered and were a real treat to look at while up in the air, sparkling their splendid purple beauty in the sun! They were the best looking glass insulators I have ever seen in service around here! As I mentioned in my last posting, one of my cousins who lived locally had a keen interest in insulator collecting during the late 60s through the early 70s. We enjoyed many insulator hunts and lengthy bike trip adventures, no matter how hot or cold the weather might have been. My cousin was pretty tough and loved a challenge as long as it was safe. Getting this insulator into appreciated hands was among them. It was on a stepped pole surrounded by ample foliage in Weymouth, MA with an aged fire alarm circuit on it; along a busy street. I wanted nothing to do with the challenge in swapping it out. But my cousin did and on a summer eve in 1970, he successfully got this gem down. He knew I really wanted it so right after acquiring it he came to my house unexpectedly with this surprise! I always appreciated that favor and kept this piece in my collection ever since. I think we made a trade or I paid him for it...I forget. But like many of my other cool "finds", recalling back to the day of this acquisition is quite clear and seems like yesterday :-) |
