Cuba, c.1903. Poletop Arc Street Lights on Tall Metal Poles with Insulators

These were the first generation of electric arc lights for outdoor and street lighting. Introduced in the 1880s, these large fixtures had two opposing carbon arc rods that had to be replaced and adjusted just about on a daily basis. So, "comfortably stepped" ornate poles like the ones you see here probably made the everyday climb a little more pleasant :-).
