I have been following the 'Benicia Glass' thread with interest as in Dec, 2007 I found this ordinary old red amber Hock wine bottle that had been immersed in a salt water environment for well over 100 years. It was buried in the mud/shell/shingle/debris crap layer under the old town wharf at Tauranga which was built in the 1870's. This bottle had obviously been undisturbed for such a long time that the salt water was able to work its wonder on the glass chemistry to cause this beautiful iridescent effect I have come to learn that you refer to as 'Benicia' glass. Had this bottle been exposed to the tidal movement, the surface would have been sandblasted and would not have retained these chemical changes on the glass surface. As it is on top of a display cabinet in the lounge, the colours change as you move past it. Pic shows two sides plus base and top. Enjoy.
