The 20,000 HP Shoshone power plant was completed in 1909 and transmitted electric power to substations at Leadville, Dillon, Idaho Springs, and finally Denver on a 100,000-volt tower line. The power plant and transmission line are an engineering marvel as one of the longest high voltage lines as well as being the highest elevation transmission line in the world. Atmospheric effects on electricity at high elevations was studied in the 1950s and 1960s in Leadville. At Argentine Pass on the continental divide during that time equipment was installed for lightning and electrical study as well. The Shoshone Transmission Line still lives on.
