Down here in New Zealand, our NZI company was set up in 1924 by a company called 'The National Electrical & Engineering Company' (NEECO). NEECO were manufacturers of electric jugs, radios, fridges, etc. They also made Electric Ranges and when the top plate had the 4 holes stamped through it where the elements were, 4 round blanks of steel were produced. Rather than scrap these discs, they stamped them into 'ashtrays', decorated them with some message, put a coat of enamel on them and fired them through the kilns and used them as giveaway advertising. NEECO advertised their own products as well as supplying to any other firms who wanted their own advertising on them and these were giveaways to loyal customers. NEECO had an annual company 'Ball', and each year a different design and date was produced in quantity and put on all the tables at the Ball and people took them home at the end of the night as a memento. The extent of the numbers and variations to be found of these enamel ashtrays is unknown - I have about 80 of them in my collection. It was only recently I spotted this one in a second hand shop and thought I'd post it here on your special day. |
