See the three following pictures for more information and detail. This fixture was made by the Wheeler Reflector Company, Boston, MA and was "cutting-edge" in its day (mid-1950s) since it provided an all-in one, self-controlled street lighting luminaire. Wheeler introduced fixtures like the one shown around 1953 and their well-deserved claim-to-fame was that these had a built-in photoelectric lighting control (atop it) and they ran on 120 volt customer secondary lines. Opposed to other lights of the time that ran on high-voltage series loops that required an extra wire on the crossarm which were inherently dangerous. The fixture I am holding is all original including its Fisher Pierce photoelectric lighting control atop it. This unit works perfectly and was taken out of service in 2010. I'll bet that absolutely no lighting engineer would have ever dreamed of such a fixture with its controller lasting into the 21st century!
