Up for sale is a real oddity that seems to turn up exclusively here in Canada, and within the country almost only here within S.W. Ontario. These Slater-made "No Tie" lag screw pieces are found on rare occasion around this area. The first example I had ever had the chance to own surfaced a year ago from a small lineman's collection I picked up. The second, third and fourth all originated from a yard sale this summer. Very unusual pieces, and apparently not widespread or common in their use. Dimensions are: 3 1/2" tall (porcelain body), by 2 7/8" wide. The lag screw protrudes an additional 2 3/8", for a total length of 5 7/8" long. This piece is made from dry process porcelain, with a heavy, clunky boddy and chunky no-tie "arms" protruding from its top. It has a recessed-embossed "S" in a diamond shape on one side (signifying Slater), with the name SLATER stamped into the metal washer that threads onto the lag screw on its base. It has a circumferential groove around the outer part of the body, but I assume the only groove designed to be used for line wire tying would be the one with the no tie projections. I know lag screw insulators aren't exactly the most desirable style that exists, but man is this thing ever cool! If you're into no-ties, lag screws or just weird-looking insulator styles, this piece is for you! This example is seemingly mint condition, save for a bit of wire rubbing in the wire groove area. There is a black gunk of some sort, perhaps rubber, on some of the high points around the outer edges of the wire groove area. I expect this could be cleaned off with acetone or a mild abrasive cleaner like barkeeper's friend. You may have trouble finding another!
