Recently, I received a tip that remnants of a telegraph line from the late 1880s could be found within Chino Hills State Park. It was quite surreal to only have to drive 25 minutes from my house to go on a hunt that was not dissimilar to the ones I've been on in Arizona. My best friend Josh joined me this time. It was his first out-in-the-wild hunt and we both had a lot of fun even though we did return empty handed. It seems that the original wire and insulators were salvaged sometime in the last century. We found no shards of glass or splices of iron wire on or under the ground. The poles, some still with their original worn-down side-pins, continued to be used for some cable based communication likely until the infamous 2008 fire. |
