Recovered several specimens of the CD 319 Knowles Prism insulators from an early power line in Connecticut. Unfortunately most of these insulators failed in service, resulting in a fast replacement with the M-3062 New Lexington insulators. All of the specimens recovered were broken in service (crowns sheared off) or deliberately smashed on the ground after removal. Been very lucky to retrieve and have restored several decent examples. Both the Prisms and New Lexingtons were unseen (except for Paul's Prism specimen, also sheared off) before this line was researched and dug by me over the last several years, and were a surprise to say the least. The search continues for better specimens! A restored specimen with crown on the right. The left shows how most were found, missing the crowns. Despite vigilant digging and probing, the missing crowns usually do not turn up. Wondering if the force of the conductor sheared it off and flung it way off in the distance. A detailed write-up about this early line and others in Connecticut accompanied my displays at the Washington and Muncie shows. |
