After getting permission for a future trip to these hills from a local farmer, I then headed back towards Dunedin trying to establish where the line hit the flats. I soon found it and fairly quickly realised I was looking at a sight that could only be appreciated by genuine Insulator Collectors. Whether your bent is 'glass' or 'mud', there was eye candy for both groups. This pic shows a pole along the roadside with 3 diff insulator on it. Top one will be English. The lower left is like the one I got that day on the hillside. The other one is an early 'Thomas' that is described in the 1907 booklet about the Waipori Scheme and was the original insulator style used. I saw 3 of these that day and to know there history while looking at them makes it a -- 'YES' moment. |
