CD 154 with a metal shield - patent 2,099,540

I thought this was a nice example of the patent

showing a metal shield on the skirt of an insulator. Given the damage on the wire groove and crown can you imagine what shape the insulator would in without the shield? Skirt would be broken and perhaps the entire insulator too. I liked the clarity and detail of the photo as well.
