I found this online pic from a local newspaper dated July 17 1981. These kids walked from the Kitchener, Ontario YMCA (Canada) to the Elora Gorge which is quite a feat. Nowadays most parents won't even allow their kids to walk to school let alone a 40 km hike along roads and railways.

I can't pinpoint the exact location of the train tracks (wish I knew) but I'm pretty sure these tracks no longer exist. http://www.archeion.ca/taking-hike
