I collected this awesome old H. E. P. C. pole sign today. An old 1950's line about 1 km from my house is unfortunately being replaced by modern composites. Some days ago I happened to notice this sign on one of the old poles, and naturally desired it. So, when the linemen were working, I asked their permission to get the sign. I don't think they were expecting someone, like me, to be interested in old lines. I had a screwdriver and a hammer to remove the sign from the pole, but it was out of my reach. An kind elderly lineman came to my aid and helped me to remove the sign from the pole. I was really excited and still am!! The porcelain signal is used for size comparison. As for the initials "H. E. P. C.," they stand for "Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario," (started in 1906) which took care of most of Ontario's lines. (Wikipedia) |
