It appears the wooden junction box in the foreground was for combining openwire pairs. The two heavy (inside-paired) cables that crossed this Maine business district's roadway possibly led to this community's central office. Note the Bell Telephone sign on the far right and cable (from the wooden box) leading to the nearby building. Upon the next pole in the background is an electric lighting distribution transformer.
