Today during the arduous hunt at New Lexington I found this beautiful U-533. I did my best to capture the wicked glaze on this piece in the picture. The crystals are formed from the Iron Interacting with the silica and the 24-48 hour firing times these pieces went through allowing the development of large iron silicate crystals. It is interesting to note that the glaze traits we collectors find beautiful with New Lexington High Voltage Insulators were also their ultimate downfall. I am convinced they went out of business because of poor quality workmanship and also poor quality materials used. These insulators were being made when the science behind making quality insulators was just beginning to be understood.
