The latter were designed with a CD 280 or a similar porcelain equivalent (notably Pittsburg "mushrooms") coupling the pipe bracket end with the fixture. The insulator provided a mechanical support for the fixture and as electrically insulating the pipe bracket from the sometimes hazardous street lighting circuit voltage.

Electric lighting service lines are seen along the left with covered paired cable for telephone subscribers.
