The latter was AT&T's toll route between Boston, MA and Portland, ME (a distance of about 90 miles) and a lot of it followed along what is now known as US Route 1 especially along the Maine stretch of it. This line (as I believe) was built in the 1890s and continued in service until the early 1930s when it was replaced by lead-sheathed paired cable.
