This is one of Rhode Island's most exposed coastlines to the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the dwellings and other structures were either severly damaged or destroyed during the Great Hurricane of 1938. The New England Telephone & Telepgraph Company brought other Bell System crews in from as far as Ohio and Georgia to restore telephone service. Some were rebuilt with openwire as you see; other areas with paired lead-sheathed covered cable.
