Most likely open wire for local lighting service customers existed along the left of this stretch of unpaved roadway in this small Maine village. Along the right is what probably were telephone subscriber lines. Given the somewhat primitive and "non-standard" appearance of the latter construction I can rather safely say these were owned and operated by a small independent ("Ma and Pa") phone company rather than New England Telephone and Telegraph Company.
